Insidious 3 Trailer Evaluation
Thinking back to my AS coursework, one thing I found particularly challenging was working in a group of people that I didn't particularly know. At first I found this quite hard to do as doing a foundation portfolio with people I didn't really know or get on with very well at first seemed daunting. I also thought it might hinder me in the process of actually achieving what our task was. However, this was not the case and by the end of this process I found that I knew not only my group better but my class as a whole better, which prepared me for working with other new people in the future.
Another thing I found rather difficult was making sure I was posting all of my work onto blogger in time. This was mainly due to the fact that I had never really used blogger before, and I wasn't sure how it worked. Although, it was also because I wasn't completely organised at the time and after finishing a post, instead of then publishing it I was just save it instead. To overcome this, this year I want to be a lot more organised within this subject as a whole, making sure I am meeting deadlines by remembering to post work on time and make sure it is finished when it is due. Also, to improve this to ask for any possible extensions if I have not been able to meet deadlines due to certain reasons instead of just leaving it.
I think a strength of my foundation portfolio was my research and planning, this is because I could use previous knowledge I had learnt from Media GCSE and carry this knowledge through. It enabled me to be able to use the internet to my advantage and get plenty of good research. I also think another strength would be the knowledge I already had for editing, this is something that I had taught myself at home using iMovie for YouTube videos that I used to make, so when it came to using this application in class I already had a lot of knowledge for it and I knew how to use it to my advantage.
I think the biggest lesson I learned last year was to spend equal amounts of time on all the different aspects of the whole process, this is including research, planning, filming and editing. I think in the foundation portfolio, we spent a lot of time researching/planning and filming, which meant that we didn't have as much time editing which you could argue needs a lot more time spent on it in order to get all the timings correct. I think this will impact my work this year by making sure we are on top of the time we're using and make sure we're not wasting it on things we don't need to do and are using it effectively. This way, our A2 coursework should be of a much higher standard as a correct amount of time has been spent on each aspect in the process and no one aspect should get more time and care spent on it than any other.
Thinking specifically about my trailer recreation, something that surprised me about the process of shooting it was how hard it was making sure that continuity was there throughout if we decided to reshoot some scenes. Another thing that surprised me was finding good locations for the scenes and trying to make sure that they were as close to the actual locations in the trailer as possible, as well as making sure we were getting the correct shot types and movements for each scene. To make sure we were doing this correctly, we were constantly referring back to the trailer itself to make sure that what we had filmed looked as similar as possible to the real trailer. One thing that surprised me about the editing process was how quickly some of the shots went. Because we were recreating the trailer, we had to make sure each shot was the same length as it was in the trailer and by doing this it made me realise how quick the edit changes from one scene to another when the tension is building and how hard it is to make sure that the timing is right.
Looking specifically at the footage we recaptured, the angle/movement used at around 1:30 in the trailer recreation I had never really thought of myself as it's quite unusual and not one I feel like I've seen much anywhere else, but I felt like it gave a different kind of perspective to what the lady in the trailer was seeing, instead of just an over the shoulder or POV shot which I liked.
